In May, 20 courageous Aspire volunteers faced their fears and took on an unforgettable challenge – abseiling down the iconic Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth to raise vital funds for Aspire Ryde. Standing at a staggering 100 metres above sea level, this incredible structure offers panoramic views across Portsmouth Harbour – not that everyone had time to enjoy them on the way down!
For many of the participants, this was a once-in-a-lifetime thrill, and for a few, it was definitely more nerve-wracking than they expected. But every single one of them completed the descent with determination, raising awareness and over £5,000 to support Aspire’s community work across the Isle of Wight. It was a first for Aspire, and we’re already looking ahead to doing it all again in 2026.
Among our brilliant group of abseilers was one particularly special participant – Paul Bradshaw – who travelled over 4,500 miles from his home in Cyprus just to take part in the event.
Here’s Paul’s story in his own words:
“I was born and bred on the Island and moved to Cyprus eight years ago. I spent many years commuting to and from Portsmouth and have always wanted to abseil down the Spinnaker Tower.
I lived in Ryde for around 20 years and could see the church that Aspire have turned into a community hub from my lounge window. I really believe Aspire do amazing work, and I feel it’s a privilege to help raise some much-needed funds to support their services in the local community.
Logistically it’s a bit of a nightmare – it’s a 4,500-mile round trip – but totally worth it!”
We’re incredibly grateful to Paul for making such an extraordinary effort, and for raising an impressive £545 towards our total. His story is a powerful reminder of how connected people feel to Aspire, even from thousands of miles away.
A huge thank you goes to all of our brave abseilers and to everyone who sponsored and supported them. Your contributions help us continue to deliver vital services – from community meals and mental health support to youth activities and outreach projects – making a real difference across the Island.
